For this lack of knowledge they have continued to suffer all forms injustices, deprivation, diseases and above all poverty.

Today in Nigeria, poverty has in so many ways been misconstrued by some scholars and most non scholars to simply mean the lack of material things, yet it is well known that in the process of social change or development, being excluded from the governance process where decisions on the development and wellbeing of the people are taken in itself creates room for the larger number of people to be afflicted by poverty. This is so because, if people do not know when, where and how to engage the governance process so that issues that affect them or are inimical to their growth and development are brought to the fore and addressed, the leaders as evidenced by our past history may continue to neglect them leading to their continued descent into poverty.

Although Nigeria today practices representative democracy, not much is known by the citizens about the obligation of their representatives to them neither do they know what their obligations are to the democratic process and to the society as a whole. Because of their lack of knowledge about what development entails and how they can constructively develop themselves and their communities, they perpetually have to contend with all forms of polemics by politicians and sycophants about what is good for them and how efforts are being made to alleviate their plight. Under the circumstance they become vulnerable to misinformation and misdirection.

The crisis that emanated from the polio vaccine administration in the north is a case in point. Even though a truce has been achieved in the matter, the impression has already been established among some people of the perceived danger of the vaccine and still do not present their wards for vaccination. Today the scourge of HIV/AIDS is on the rise but the commitment and drive towards educating members of the public about the scourge is still like a drop in the ocean when compared with the drive, commitment and resources committed to other sectors that hold little or nothing to the alleviation of their plight. In the area of governance, it has become the exclusive preserve of some few. The electorates are often jettisoned after elections and not consulted in the governance process until another election is due.

CEPAD’s mission is therefore informed by the need to contribute to the national effort to empower citizens to fight poverty, HIV/AIDS, maternal and infant mortality and promote democracy, good governance, universal basic education and community development in Nigeria. CEPAD hopes through its programmes to involve Nigerians in the governance process and empower them to overcome poverty, HIV/AIDS and such other problems that limit their growth.

STRUCTURE OF THE ORGANIZATION:

ORGANS:

Congress
Board of Governors
Secretariat

The organization has a Board of Governors which is made up of seven members and a Management Team.
